Mirroring the Ecosystem

This project consists of a series of data visualizations developed for the exhibition Mirroring the Ecosystem, held in Timișoara between February and April 2023. The exhibition explored the economic and material landscape of the city by combining research data, collected objects, manufacturing components, and photographic documentation. Its focus was on mapping the flows, infrastructures, and informal systems that define Timișoara’s local economy.

The data visualizations were designed to function as interpretative tools within this broader curatorial framework. Rather than presenting data as isolated statistics, the visual language emphasized relationships between actors, resources, and material processes. Categories included local production networks, logistics chains, supply routes, and waste management cycles—each rendered through diagrammatic formats that favored clarity while retaining systemic complexity.

The visual system was developed to integrate seamlessly with other curatorial materials in the exhibition, including physical objects and the visual identity of the programme. Typography, layout, and iconography were standardized to support cross-reading between quantitative data and qualitative findings. Each visualization operated both independently and as part of a network, inviting viewers to shift between micro- and macro-levels of analysis.

By embedding data within the physical and social context from which it was extracted, the project aimed to surface patterns not immediately visible through raw data alone. The visualizations served not only as explanatory tools but also as active components of the exhibition’s spatial narrative—bridging abstract research with tangible material realities.
